  6. Video-On-Demand Chipset 11/16/94 TEL

  8. Orckit Communications has announced a
  9. technology deal with LSI Logic in the
  10. US. According to the Tel Aviv-based
  11. telecoms company, terms of the
  12. contract call for both companies to
  13. develop and market a dedicated
  14. chipset for the emerging video on
  15. demand (VOD) market.

  17.     According to Dan Arazi, vice
  18. president of marketing for Orckit,
  19. this chipset will allow systems
  20. integrators and telephone operating
  21. companies to offer their customers a
  22. cost-effective VOD service over
  23. existing twisted pair cable
  24. infrastructures.

  26.     Orckit specializes in the design
  27. and manufacture of core technologies,
  28. as well as systems for high data rate
  29. modulation/demodulation transmission
  30. equipment.

  32.     According to Arazi, two
  33. generations of products are being
  34. developed at the same time -- they
  35. both can support downstream data
  36. rates of 6.144 Mbps (megabits per
  37. second) which the company claims can
  38. support three or four compressed
  39. video channels working to VHS video
  40. quality, as well as bi-directional
  41. channel of up to 576 Kbps
  42. (kilobits/second).

  44.     The first generation system
  45. complies with the new ANSI (American
  46. National Standards Institute) T1 E1
  47. standard and meets the distances plus
  48. specifications laid down, but uses
  49. off-the-shelf DSPs (digital signal
  50. processors), and is not optimized for
  51. cost, size or power consumption.

  53.     The second generation of chips
  54. will be based on the fully customized
  55. LSI Logic ASIC (application specific
  56. integrated circuit), which Orckit
  57. claims will give a dramatic lowering
  58. of the cost, size, and power
  59. consumption of the equipment. This
  60. chipset should ship towards the end
  61. of the second quarter of 1995,
  62. officials said.

  64.     So what do all these developments
  65. mean for the VOD marketplace?
  66. According to the company, the
  67. development should allows vendors
  68. developing VOD technology to source
  69. dedicated and low-cost chipsets for
  70. their system boards, rather than rely
  71. on complex and expensive DSP-based
  72. systems. This should cut the cost of
  73. VOD technology hardware in the short
  74. run, as well as the longer term.
